How a child's information is handled under COPPA, and the rights a parent holds over it.
Last updated
Little Bereans is built for children, so the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to us directly. This notice sets out, in plain terms, what we collect from a child, why, and the control a parent keeps over it. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy and adds to it.
The operator of this service is ZO Tech LLC.
COPPA contact: reach the operator through our contact form, choosing the privacy topic. A parent request is answered within 30 days.
This is the single most important design decision in the product. Only an adult can create an account. A child profile is something a parent makes insidethe parent’s account — it is not a separate account, and it has no credentials of its own.
We collect the minimum needed to teach a lesson and remember where the child got to.
We ask children not to type personal details into free-text answers, and the activities are written so there is no reason to.
We do not show advertising to children, we do not allow third-party advertising or analytics code to run in the product, and we do not use any child’s information for behavioural advertising or profiling. There is no ad network, no tracking pixel and no analytics SDK in this product at all.
We do not sell, rent, trade, or share a child’s personal information with third parties for their own purposes. The only outside companies that touch it are the service providers we use to run the product, listed on our Third-Party Services page, each contractually bound to use it only to provide that service to us.
The one exception is disclosure required by law, or necessary to protect a child’s safety.
Because only an adult can create an account, and a child profile can only be created from inside that signed-in adult account, a child profile cannot exist unless a parent made it. Creating a child profile is your consent to our collecting the information described above for that child. You can withdraw it at any time by deleting the profile.
At any time, you may:
See Data & Account Deletion for how to do each of these, or write to our contact form. We verify that a request comes from the parent on the account before we act on it.
Where a school, church or co-op sets up Little Bereans for children in its care, that organisation confirms to us that it has authority from each child’s parent to do so, and acts as the parent for the purposes of this notice. Parents may still contact us directly about their own child.
We will not use a child’s information in a materially new way without first notifying the parent on the account and, where the law requires it, obtaining consent again.
